Your national driving license is sufficient and does not need to be accompanied by an international driving permit if: - You hold a license from a European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) country in Latin characters and are traveling within the EU, the UK, the USA, Australia, or Canada.
- You hold a UK license and are traveling within the EU, except for Italy, where our rental conditions require an international driving permit in addition to your local license.
In some cases, if you hold a US, Canadian or Australian license, the International permit may be optional to travel in Europe, but as as you may be crossing borders during your stay and as policies may vary within a short time,
we strongly recommend that travelers from non-EU/EEA countries carry an international driving permit to facilitate potential police checks in Europe. - You hold a US, Canadian, or Australian license — you will be allowed to rent a car from our branches in the UK, Belgium, France and Portugal.
- You hold an Australian license — you will be allowed to rent a car from our branches in Spain.
Outside of these specific cases, all drivers (main and additional)
must provide an international driving license in addition to their national license.
In particular: - Holders of a US, Canadian, or Australian license must present both their international and domestic license to rent a car in Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, and Slovakia.
- Holders of a US or Canadian license must present both their international and domestic license to rent a car in Spain.
What is an international driving permit (IDP)? - It must be the original version of an international driving license that complies with the models defined in the Geneva or Vienna Conventions,
OR - The original version of a sworn translation of the national driving license.
It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure they are in possession of the required documents before picking up the vehicle.
The documents must be presented in paper or laminated format at the rental counter. Photocopies or images on mobile phones are not accepted.
International driving licenses obtained online (digital/pdf format) are not accepted.
